But There Was No Mention of God

Last fall, I visited the zoo with my grandchildren. I’ve been visiting this particular zoo ever since I was a child and I always enjoy it; it’s a great place for children to run free and all to learn and enjoy. On this beautiful fall day, I was really struck by an observance… no matter the exhibit, no matter the animal, there was no mention of God… a few trees were showing multi-colored leaves, flowers were still blooming, the air was fresh, but no mention of God, no mention of… “God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind and everything that creeps on the ground after it’s kind…”  Genesis 1:25   But then, I didn’t expect to see any evidence of a belief in Creation instead of evolution.

The cheetah exhibit instructed how the cheetah’s body is specially designed (my word!) as the fastest land animal on earth: a flexible spine for long strides, over-sized heart to pump more blood during runs, bigger nasal passages so oxygen intake is more efficient during a chase. The list went on, and the more I read, the more I noticed the lack of credit being given to God for uniquely designing this animal.

I realized a magnificent truth was being purposely withheld from the public; everywhere was evidence of creature worship. God is evident through His creation: “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”  Romans Chapter 1:20.  “For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever.  Romans Chapter 1: 29.   As I mentioned before, I was not expecting to see any proclamation that God had created the trees, the leaves, the flowers, the animals, but that’s the point… it shouldn’t be necessary, as God’s power and design is revealed by the earth and everything in it.

In the book of Job, God asks Job: “Who has put wisdom in the inner most being, or given understanding to the mind?  Who can count the clouds by wisdom, or tip the water jars of the heavens, when the dust hardens into mass and the clods stick together? Can you hunt the prey for the lion, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, when they crouch in their dens and lie in wait in their lair?  Who prepares for the raven it’s nourishment when it’s young cry to God and wander about without food?” Job Chapter 38: 36-41.

We tour the zoo; see the baby elephant, the snake house, the bird house, and stand and observe the sometimes seemingly odd combinations of length of neck or ears, number of legs, distinctive markings, manes, long tails, little tails, how eyes are set within the head, size of jaws, size of paws, hooves or claws, and each and every animal has the exact characteristics and the perfect design to live, survive, and thrive within their own particular habitat on this planet. But there is no mention of God.
